| | | More pro-business steps | | 12 March 2006 | | By B. Suresh Ram | | | PUTRAJAYA: Pemudah, the country's special task force dedicated to facilitate all aspects of doing business in Malaysia, will further undertake improvement efforts in five more areas. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the improvements, to take place beginning next month, would cover government procurement, labour legislation, closing a business, dealing with licenses and trade facilitation. | | | | He said five focus groups established under Pemudah will be delivering the improvements. | | | | "There could be more, but I will announce them as we go along. Otherwise there will be too many announcements and people will not register them," he told reporters after officially receiving the 2009 Annual Report of Pemudah and launching the Guidebook on Registering Property in Malaysia. | | | | Najib also called on Pemudah to double its efforts in contributing significantly towards the government's efforts to transform the economy. | | | "This year must see the focus on enhancing government efficiency and processes. | | | | "We must accelerate decision-making, including with respect to policies, approvals and contracts." | | | | Najib also commended Pemudah for providing an excellent forum for the government to not only hear the concerns of industries, but also providing an opportunity to the private sector to work with government on solutions to their concerns. | | | | "Clearly, Pemudah has met more than my expectations. Given that its initiatives are inclusive and done collaboratively, I am confident that the public sector will give their full support to ensure that these improvements are implemented, " he said. | | | | "This is necessary to ensure that the improvements become part of the system, to such an extent that it can be taken for granted." | | | | Najib said the first two years of Pemudah, which was established in 2007, focused on "low hanging fruits" tackling efficiency issues, working with ministries and agencies to bring about improvements. | | | | "The past year, Pemudah deliberated on 'higher hanging fruits' by making contributions to the review of policies that have a significant bearing on Malaysia's investment environment." | | | | Najib, who is also the finance minister, said that these include the review of the Foreign Investment Committee (FIC) guidelines, the Distributive Trade Guidelines, Competition Policy, Employment Matters and Government Procurement. | | | | "The mark of this government has been its willingness to consider the concerns of the business community and the public at large. | | |
