| Malaysia retains 19th position in global export trade
Malaysia retained its position as the 19 th largest exporting country, according to the World Trade Organisation (WTO)'s International Trade Report for 2006.
Malaysia 's merchandise export grew at an annual rate of 14% in 2006 to reach US$161 billion (RM555.4 billion) and accounting for 1.2% of the total global exports. In 2005, the country recorded US$140.9 billion (RM486.1 billion) with an annual growth of 11%.
In terms of merchandise import, Malaysia was ranked 23rd largest importer in 2006, with US$131 billion (RM452 billion) as compared with the 24th position in 2005 when Malaysia registered US$114.6 billion (RM395.4 billion).
Among Asian merchandise exporters, Malaysia was placed eighth after China , Japan , South Korea , Hong Kong , Singapore , Taiwan and Saudi Arabia . The country was also placed in eighth position with regards to merchandise imports after China , Japan , Hong Kong , South Korea , Singapore , Taiwan , and India.
In terms of trade in commercial services, Malaysia was ranked as the 30th largest exporter in 2006 at US$21 billion (RM72.5 billion) and 29 th position in terms of imports with US$23 billion (RM79.35 billion).
