PM: Take Public Delivery System To Next Level

New Straits Times, 8 January, 2008.

PUTRAJAYA: Take the public service delivery system to greater heights, the prime minister said in his first new year address to civil servants yesterday.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said even though the economy was doing well, the country was not spared problems such as the current situation involving cooking oil.

Abdullah thanked and congratulated civil servants for working hard over the last year to implement changes to the public delivery system and said the improvements were tangible.

He said they should not rest on their laurels, but must add value and further improve their service to the public.

"Last year, the public delivery system was a topic that was constantly raised in the press, by the public, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.
"We took several measures, including setting up the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (Pemudah).

"We have seen the results of these measures. It is true that the public delivery system has improved over the last year. For this, I thank you all and congratulate you," Abdullah said at the monthly gathering for staff of the Prime Minister's Department.

"However, we cannot say 'enough' or 'it's okay now'. This kind of attitude won't add value to our success. It must be a resolve on our part to add value to our work because that is the national mission."

He said civil servants must also strive to improve themselves as this would enhance their work.

"Everyone usually has new year resolutions, but by the third month we forget about them and they remain resolutions.

"We must add value to ourselves by increasing our knowledge, by staying updated, so that we can use our knowledge on the latest issues to help us achieve more success.

"Let us make it our resolve to improve the quality of our achievements and the way we work and to improve ourselves.

"This is what the people want and, I am sure, what we also want for ourselves."
